How rye is grown in Ukraine
Rye grain in Ukraine comes almost entirely from winter rye. It is sown in September, usually a little earlier than winter wheat, and harvested in July. Rye is the most winter-hardy cereal: it survives harder frosts than wheat and starts growing again very early in spring.
It also copes with sandy, acidic and less fertile soils where wheat struggles. That is why rye has a long history in Polissia, the forest belt of northern Ukraine that takes in the north of the Zhytomyr and Rivne regions. Its deep roots and fast spring growth make it a good choice after a difficult autumn, and it smothers many weeds on its own.
The weak points are lodging in wet years, sprouting in the ear if rain catches the ripe crop, and ergot, a fungus that forms dark bodies in the ear. Good cleaning and a timely harvest deal with most of these risks.
Two types of variety are grown. Traditional open-pollinated rye is cheaper to sow and very hardy. Hybrid rye yields more but needs good pollination, since poorly pollinated ears are more open to ergot infection.
Our rye farming
Rye is one of seven crops grown by our farming group in the Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr and Rivne regions. In general, rye farming suits the lighter soils that hold back other cereals, which are common in parts of northwestern Ukraine.
Tillage is chosen per field, from classical ploughing to no-till, depending on the soil, moisture, weather and the crop that came before. After harvest, the grain goes to our certified silos near the fields, where it passes through receiving, cleaning and drying before storage. Cleaning is the step that removes ergot bodies, weed seeds, chaff and broken kernels from rye.

Distilleries use rye for spirits; here starch content and grain soundness matter most.
Animal feed
Rye is fed to pigs and cattle in limited shares of the ration, usually ground and mixed with other grains.
Seed and cover crops
Rye is also grown as a winter cover crop that protects soil from erosion between main crops.
Bulk rye grain: what buyers can source
We sell bulk rye grain loaded on trucks or railcars. For road shipments, big bags are possible. Volumes depend on the season, so we confirm what is available when you send a request.
Quality is set in the contract specification: moisture, falling number, test weight, foreign matter and ergot content are the usual figures. The grain meets the requirements of the State Standard of Ukraine, and extra certification can be arranged depending on the sales market and end use. Export documents are agreed per contract; a phytosanitary certificate and a certificate of origin are the usual set for grain.
Rye grain for sale is offered on Incoterms 2020 terms FCA, CPT, DAP and DDP. The price depends on the lot, the season and the delivery term.
Dry, clean rye keeps well in storage, which lets us spread shipments over the season instead of selling everything at harvest.
